Introduction to Worthing

Worthing is situated on the south coast of England. One of the largest towns and the biggest resort in the county of West Sussex, Worthing is a place with plenty to offer. It lies between the beautiful South Downs and five miles of beach and coastline. The town overlooks the English Channel and benefits from a sheltered warm climate. It has around 100,000 permanent residents with holiday makers increasing this figure considerably during the summer months. Many of those visiting the town stay in the hotels or guest houses located mainly along the seafront.

Attractions include shopping areas, three theatres, two cinemas, bowling alley and plenty of places to eat and drink. The town is well served with parks and gardens offering passive and active leisure activities such as football, cricket, hockey, bowls, tennis, basketball and children’s play. Within the borough there are also leisure centres offering a wide range of sporting activities and indoor swimming pools . The Downs provide the ideal location for horse riding. Water sports such as sailing and windsurfing take place off the coast.

Worthing has a long history and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The town’s museum and art gallery is renowned for its varied collection of historical artefacts, fashion and decorative works of art and craft.

The coming of the railway in the 1800’s brought about a massive expansion of Worthing which attracted families and businesses from all over the country. There are no less than five railway stations located in the Worthing area, East Worthing, Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington on Sea and Goring By Sea. London is sixty miles away and can be reached by train in just over an hour, Worthing station is about a fifteen minute walk from the the sea front. It is also easy to join the national motorway network using the A24 and A27 which passes through the town.
